Also a little Dunning-Kruger effect: “I don’t know enough of this topic to answer completely” vs “I know more than the existing answers”

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How did "ancient humans" got the idea to pierce their ears/body ?
1·4 months agoMy guess is; to imitate birds. I’ve seen some early piercings that weren’t metal, but long sticks. If you find something that looks like a cool feather, the only sensible thing to do is jam it into your body and strut
What’s more, the response wasn’t just rapid but appeared to provide ongoing protection. When the mice were later re-exposed to cancer cells, none developed new tumors
Apparently it made them stronger
Jesus that last VQ is making me irrationally angry
Exactly this, but when I finally wrestled it from him, I realised he was eating fox shit
This latest Rom Com is so realistic, but did we have to stop the plot every time a character needed to take a shit?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What music do you like to listen to when studying / working?
5·10 months agoI have a playlist set up to listen to full albums at random. Today was
- Motorpsycho: Timothy’s Monster
- Samsara Blues Experiment: Waiting for the Flood
- Math the Band: Don’t Worry
- Cymande: Cymande
- Minsk: With Echoes in the Movement of Stone
- Common: Be
Anything goes, I just hate having to stop the tunes when I have to jump on a call

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Can i simply bake frozen chicken or does it actually need to thaw over several hours or immersed in cold water or something?
2·11 months agoLots of thermal paste makes the skin extra crispy, and is a great source of heavy metal toxicity you won’t find in other cooking methods!

World News@lemmy.world•Britain tries to tackle youth knife crime crisis
17·11 months agoAfter surviving the Southport stabbings, Leanne Lucas launched the “Let’s Be Blunt” campaign, calling for safer, rounded-tip kitchen knives instead of pointed ones.
Just feels so short-sighted. There are plenty of other sharp objects in the world. Someone motivated to get a weapon is unlikely to just give up because kitchen knives are round tipped

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If you have cut off mainstream music streaming, how do you discover new music or artists and songs like what you're listening frequently?
14·1 year agoIt’s always a treat when the support band is better than the one you came for

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why is it so hard for people to concede even small points when discussing charged topics?
23·1 year agoAlso consider the Yes Ladder - in sales, getting someone to say yes to something small makes them more likely to agree to other things.
It also applies to other contexts. If a police suspect refuses to talk, they ask innocuous questions because once someone starts talking, it’s hard to stop.
Admitting incorrectness will make you more likely to concede other points too

21·2 years agoConfirmation bias: all the shite furniture from 1800s has rotted to dust already
Edit for full disclosure: I’ve exclusively bought antique furniture. I’m basically a shill for big-auction

Exactly, this shit. I got hit with an age check on ebay for buying a bladed weapon, a tiling trowel, had the account since 2006
