I don’t know what’s sadder, people paying attention to some incels obsessing about women or people paying attention to celebrities and met gala.
Most of the time it’s not like they are meeting other people. The commitments are like family visits every other week, traveling, studying, fixing something at home and so on. Occasionally it’s some birthday party or something. It’s mostly that everyone is busy all the time. Which I do understand but it takes a lot of of effort to organize something.

if any, and we can’t convince product that making sure the feature works, or fixing bugs on a 2-3% browser is priority.
That’s exactly the problem. If all the people that should know better promoted Firefox in stead of shitting on Mozilla it would not be 2-3% browser. Linux is hitting 5% market share and it’s way more complicated to switch OS than a browser. It doesn’t make sense that even less people user Firefox. Of course it’s just my opinion but I believe that consistent effort from the community to warn people about Chrome and promote Firefox would help it keep sufficient market share to stay relevant. Instead, even here on lemmy, people love to complain about Mozilla and promote other browsers. So yeah, great job everyone.

No, it’s absolutely not like oil & gas. Average person has very little impact on the energy policy of their country but has huge impact on the browser they are using. And I’m not talking about the ignorant people using the default browser without understanding the difference between Chrome and Google. I’m talking about all the technically literate people that should known better but chose to use Chrome because it’s slightly more convenient. The people that attack Mozilla for not being able to compete with Google with fraction of their resources. When the only way to browse the web is with Google account I will definitely remember those people.
Don’t remember the name but I used it couple of times in corpo settings. I think it weird that we have to organize meetings with couple of friends the same way we organized team buildings. I mean, weekends are for resting. Why everyone has everything booked months in advance? I spend every weekend actively but I don’t have a lot of plans that I can’t drop to meet someone.
Maybe they died?
For me the issue is that everyone is always busy.
Me: hey, how about we meet next Friday
Person1: I can only do Sunday from 17 to 19
Person2: I can only do Saturday
Person3: I can do Sunday but from 19 to 21
Person4: I can only do the Friday after that
Or even better, they take 5 days to reply and in the end say something came up.
But once I manage to find the one date that fits most people and plan something people do show up.

I always thought recommendation algorithm will do it but the progress stopped at some point. We had apps recommending videos, music, feeds, news and so on for a long time but it never evolved into recommended careers or recommended places to live. Not in the sense where some algorithms that tracks you all the times tells you what your next important life choice should be. I don’t know anyone who’s using AI like that yet but I can see it happening in the future.

Thanks for checking. That clarifies things a lot.
I guess we’re fucked. reCaptcha is not used for visiting websites but for registering or submitting form. I can think of couple of cases where I’m required to complete captcha for online shopping or, ever worse, for work. Step by step they will force us all to either use approved devices or be locked out of big parts of the internet.
This is of course thanks to all the people shitting on Firefox over the years and saying that Chrome is just better and that there’s nothing wrong with giving Google control over the web. So yeah, thanks.

99% of internet users don’t know what a torrent is.

Oh, I thought they are talking about browsing on their phones.
That still makes very little sense. What if someone has an iPhone? What if I am browsing on my phone? What if I don’t have my phone near me? This sounds like some optional, extreme case feature. Like when they are pretty much sure you’re a bot but the website optionally gives you last one chance to prove you’re not instead of just rejecting your request.

At that point, reCAPTCHA will forgo the old image puzzles and require you to scan a QR code with your smartphone to prove you’re human.
What is that supposed to mean? What QR code? Just any? I’m supposed to find some QR code laying around and scan it? Or will the webpage display a QR and I’m supposed to scan it with my phone using a mirror or something?

About 30 people from 12 different countries left the ship after the first infected person died and went home.

What happened to good old single serving sites? Does every site has to have some useful info now?

I bought all the toilet paper that was in store. Just in case.
That depends on the country. You should switch your software to US locale.

I think contraception is kind of coincidence. The biggest change is society becoming less conservative. This meant that women were able to access contraception but it’s no the main reason for drop of birthrate. Women starting careers means they are less interested in spending a decade or two raising 5 kids. Being single or living in informal relationship was also normalized. Basically the model of family where woman stays at home and has a kid every year or two was replaced by both parents working and sharing responsibilities. People have 1 or 2 kids to satisfy the need of having their own family unit and stop.
And yes, the replacement number is a fairly xenophobic concept. The narrative is that GDP has to keep growing. To constantly grow the economy you need more workers (or offset the decline with increased productivity but when population numbers fall fast that’s difficult). So the narrative from capitalists is that we need to hit replacement levels or the economy will suffer. If people don’t want to have kids then we will need immigrants and this is turned into replacement theory and used as propaganda by far right. So the far right wants to return to traditional family to save us from immigrants. And how do you return to traditional family? Less rights for women, harder access to contraception and abortion and, of course, no rights for same sex couples.
So right now in Europe Spain is for example openly saying their future depends on immigrants and is welcoming them (the current government does at least) while Poland is still very much opposed to any immigration and didn’t make any social progress in decades (no same sex marriages, difficult access to IVF, banned abortion).

I think only Israel is above replacement levels now. All the other developed countries have significantly lower birthrate than couple of decades ago. All the gay couples having kids and IVF is simply not enough to offset the loss of big families. And that’s on top of the simple fact, that not having kids is socially acceptable now and people who don’t want kids simply don’t have them. To offset that we would need 3-4 kids to be the norm for a family, not 1-2.
And yes, detailed stats would be interesting. Let me know what you’ll find :)
Celebrities dressing up to promote crazy expensive brands in a event sponsored by Bezos. Yeah, that’s for sure the kind of art we should be cheering for.
