Technology@lemmy.world•Tesla Has 39 Unsupervised Robotaxis Nearly a Year After Launch. At This Rate, They’ll Catch Up to Waymo in 85 Years.
1·23 days agoI mean, there are traffic violations, and then there are traffic violations - if there’s a dead body at the end, it was the second type.
Neither is desirable, but it would actually be a big win to create a tech system that drives a car that produces fewer fatalities per mile than the average human, regardless of whether or not it generates speeding tickets or other inconveniences.
That’s my opinion, anyway. I won’t downvote you, I only downvote comments unhelpful to the overall conversation, you’re not being unhelpful, I just disagree with you.

51·24 days agoI was actually surprised that Waymo had only thousands of units in operation.
That being said, 3,000 commercially operating for years with zero fatalities, that’s not nothing. It’s not a ton, it doesn’t change the world (much), but it isn’t zero. Tesla’s result so far rounds down to zero.

191·25 days agoDo they know how to scale up an autonomous taxi service? I mean, maybe? There’s no sign of that anywhere in the Tesla data, though.
The original target was Robotaxis to cover “half the US population by the end of 2025,” so we’re nowhere close to on-target, and those goals weren’t given with any asterix on the earnings call when they were declared. I don’t see any reason to move the goalpost, it’s just a miss taken to a funny conclusion.

31·4 months agoAny Cadillac for Sentry Mode (it’s called Surround Vision Recorder, and unlike Tesla, it’s not constantly narcing on you, it’s locally stored). I’m sure others have equivalents, that’s just the one I know off the top of my head.
Any… car… for keyless entry. That’s literally more common than using a key in a new vehicle.

It’s one of the many smoke grenades that create colorful smoke, the chemicals in a smoke grenade aren’t awesome, but it’s not CS gas or tear gas or anything that is specifically designed to hurt you.

7·5 months agoI’m generally a dickhead, so I investigated: Cybertrucks do not have a rain sensor, according to this thread where Cybertruck owners weren’t sure which doodad was their rain sensor: https://www.cybertruckownersclub.com/forum/threads/is-this-a-rain-sensor.35270/post-30486895
As for car wash mode, you’re definitely correct! Most EVs have it, both to activate those quality of life features you mention (because EVs don’t natively have a neutral gear), but also to perform very important safety functions related to the vehicle electronics. I imagine, most EVs link those functions to the rain sensor or other moisture sensors as well.
Here’s one of the dozens of Cybertrucks that have been destroyed by a $5 touchless wash, LOL: https://www.flyingpenguin.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/cybertruck-wash-dead-768x1377.jpg

411·5 months agoI effing LOVE that there is a Car Wash Mode… because enough water to rinse soap off your car is enough to brick a Cybertruck.
And of course, it’s a mode because there is no rain sensor. So it’s not like with all the tech and software and apps, it can protect ITSELF from a light spritzing. You need to be constantly on-guard, otherwise your “bulletproof” truck might permanently brick itself because it was exposed to water XD

3·10 months agoIt’s Bill Burr’s 21st century and we’re all just living in it.
He’s crushing it on Star Wars stuff, his comedy is on fucking fire, and weirdly he’s one of a small axis of Americans (bad word choice lol) who has the backbone to resist our descent into fascism. I agree with him and I fuckin hate it, bring back buttons, I don’t’ want to drive an iPad.
