  • I think walking is on the right track. If you feel mental fatigue from playing music (or other hobby), you will need to recharge and get new inspiration.

Physical activity is the best way to let the mind recharge.

Personally I currently have a lot of wood to chop, and so I do that hard manual labor just to disconnect the mind. People keep asking me if I want to borrow their electric wood chopper. I have turned down 5 people by now, and my in-law even delivered one without asking - insisting to help out. Obviously I don’t use it, because that’s not the point at all. If I wanted chopped wood I could simply buy it. I want to chop wood, because it’s a way for me to mentally zone out.

Anyway, you can spice up your walks by bringing a sketch pad and draw something. Perhaps that’ll keep your mind more focused on observing the sorroundings and giving a purpose to the walking.

  • I am the sole man having lunch break with a group of women.

Whenever they start talking about how disgusting beards are, which is surprisingly more common that it ought to be, they always come to the same conclusion: Beards are nice if the man “keeps it”, by groming, cleaning, cutting, brushing, shaving the stubble and so on. A good beard is a plus, a bad beard is negative. And so they always make sure to point out that they don’t mean me, because I’m one of the guys with a good beard.

They’re all simultaneously looking at me, judging my beard and agreeing that this is the acceptable kind of beard, looking for my input and begging for my mansplanation.

However I just nod, and say “yeah yeah mm.mm. you have a point”. I don’t actually let them in on my secret to my “acceptable beard”, because what the fuck are they to do with that anyway? They don’t have beards.

  • I have and use vinyls, but I use them differently.

I don’t keep a collection and they’re not rare or expensive. They cost next to nothing in second hand stores when I buy the odd “greatest hits” and mixed artist records that have no collectible value.

I use them with no regard to their longevity - I consume them. I play them on a cheap record player with a less than ideal needle or speakers, well aware that they will wear down and become useless over time. I don’t care. I don’t believe in the need to preserve everything that is old only due to it being old. I’ll leave that for the museums. I don’t run a museum.

I do it because I like the part of the ritual where you actually just listen to records and hear all the songs that are on there without having to make a choice or change tracks all the time.

A lot of records only have one or two hit songs. The rest is stuff I’d never choose to search for, and is never played on the radio. These are the tracks I like to hear, because I would not be exposed to them otherwise.

  • I think I do. I’ve been managing properties for some 20 years. Mostly commercial.

What I’m saying is that in order to understand why the landlord doesn’t just cash in on 50 years of rent, you first need to understand the difference between the profit/loss and assets/liabilities sections in a financial statement.

The tenants (income) are not paying for the building (asset). They only need to cover the interest (cost) from the loan (liability) in order for the the landlord to make money (profit).

The only time it makes sense to compare the rental income to the value of the asset is for the annual asset evaluation.

If the landlord waves the evaluation and rent around like OP says, it just shows that the landlord doesn’t understand it either and is just throwing numbers into the air to impress people.

  • If the universe is infinite and homogeneous then that would infer all finite permutations of energy occur, not once but infinitely many times.

    That’s a big if.

Something can be infinite without having any 1:1 repetition of all or any finite parts. Depends on how homogenous it really is and at what scale. If there are infinite permutations within a finite area, then it won’t necessarily repeat ever. There’s currently no proof of whether the universe is discreet or continuous.
