News@lemmy.world•New Covid variant has been identified and is already spreading in 25 states
1·16 days agoThey still exist, but the number of samples is orders of magnitude away from what we’ve been used to in the early years of the pandemic.
And why would any of these players invest $100b to lower their product’s prices at the risk of overproducing
When asked if he had any health issues people should know about, he replied, “Of course not,”
Hehe that’s funny

161·3 months agoEveryone acts like it’s all about gaming, but people want to use Lightroom, Photoshop, Excel, their banking and tax software etc. They don’t want the alternatives because they’re not integrated well, they can’t access their Dropbox/Apple Cloud/whatever and they gave Linux their Google password already, why does it need it again for that mail software that has some stupid bird name instead of “mail”.

721·4 months agoAt no point has Micron ever stated they’re switching to HBM memory. Micron isn’t “pivoting to AI” and neither are its fabs. If you write this as a journalist, you clearly take your opinion from reddit and lack common industry knowledge.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why does everyone put celery in soup stock?
1·4 months agoIn addition to what the others said about mirepoix, or stock, soups are experienced as more full-bodied or wholehearted when celery root is added. The earthy, bitter taste can be balanced by the right combination of sweetness (from other vegetables) and saltiness or used as intensifying effect for a strong umami taste, e.g. in poultry stock.
I haven’t met anyone who specifically disliked the taste of celery root in soups yet.
Out of curiosity, do you also dislike other earthy tastes, like truffles, lamb, champignons, girolles?

World News@lemmy.world•The sunscreen scandal shocking Australia - the world's skin cancer capitalEnglish
10·7 months agoI just read the article from the German consumer organisation “Stiftung Warentest” about that, they write (translated with deepl):
Some products say “without octocrylene”. What do we make of this?
Octocrylene is an approved UV filter that became the subject of debate some time ago: initially, critics feared that it could interfere with the hormone system. The EU’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has reviewed the scientific studies. According to this, the maximum permitted concentration of octocrylene in cosmetics is still considered safe - it is 10 percent of the total product. It has not been exceeded by any sunscreen product in our tests since 2018.
Scientists have shown that sunscreens with octocrylene can also contain benzophenone - as an impurity or, over time, as a cleavage product of octocrylene. Benzophenone is considered a probable carcinogen. The SCCS demands that suppliers should strictly control their sunscreens and keep the benzophenone content at trace levels.
We test all products containing octocrylene for benzophenone and only found elevated levels once in 2025, in an already defective product. In our test tables, we indicate which products contain which UV filters. This allows consumers to decide for themselves whether they want to use a sunscreen containing octocrylene.
Important: Always dispose of products containing octocrylene after the season. The benzophenone content can increase during storage.

News@lemmy.world•RFK Jr. Report Will Link Autism To Tylenol Use During Pregnancy, Report Says
9·7 months agoI don’t follow this topic regularly and I can’t say anything about the mechanisms. From a superficial search I would claim that there is good evidence that Tylenol use during pregnancy can make the development of asthma in the child more likely. There is also some indication (at least one large cohort study from Icahn medical school) that it may cause delayed language development.
That would be enough evidence for me to discourage use during pregnancy for treatment of discomfort or light pain, when safer options can be tried.

8·7 months agoCan someone explain to me who these people are? What were they doing before they’ve been ordered to DC? Are they a standing army, training while they’re not ordered somewhere? Or are they reservists? Or police from elsewhere?

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•98 degrees upstairs, ac stopped working at 8am.English
4·10 months agoI often hear americans (even scientists) say that they prefer the Fahrenheit scale for weather forecasts, but I believe the perceived higher accuracy is an illusion. Forecasts aren’t that accurate for any given micro climate.
For example, I don’t care if my weather forecast says 26°C or 28°C, I know it’s “short sleeves” weather and when I look at a few graphs at the end of the day, it’s been 25.6°C two meters above ground 100 meters south of me and 27.3°C in the garden, but only for 5 minutes etc.
