No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How did Google win the search engine war?
2·8 days agoI remember one of the biggest novelties was the number of Os ask l at the bottom like Goooooooooooogle. “Each o is a whole page full of results!”
Also about Gmail, it had a lot of storage compared to hotmail or yahoo where you had to delete old emails and if someone sent you a big attachment your inbox may become full and you stopped receiving emails until you did some cleanup. Gmail free storage was so big that some extensions treated it like cloud storage (i.e. gspace)
Seriously my 7 year old i3 w 12gb of RAM laptop running mint feels more smooth than my new work laptop with 64gb of RAM running windows 11 (and a bunch of corporate clutter)

1·15 days agoNo idea. Here’s an example case: https://www.sixflags.com/cashless
I’ve also seen it at concert venues but I have never used them

2·21 days agoUsually the cheapest is a big can of bud light or similar, I think they are 24oz
Draft and craft beers are usually $2-$6 more than the bud light for 16-20oz, so $12 would actually get you the biggest at most stadiums

10·21 days agoI mean I’d keep the $300 and use my CC to get the beers. Most stadiums also have cash to card ATMs if you absolutely don’t have any card with you
Similar. I am/was the go to for my family regarding technology. Last year my uncle asked me about laptops for her daughter that was about to enter college and I had no idea. I have been using an inexpensive core i3 for the past 7 years with linux for my personal laptop and my work changes me my laptop wave 2 or 3 years but it is so bloated that it never feels fast and I no longer have any idea about the trends or requirements nowadays
I used to have 2 custom PCs and upgraded them little by little every time I found something interesting on sale
Similar timing, a friend introduced me to Ubuntu around 2005 or 2006 and dualbooted for a while and always had a live USB with me. Tried many distros, I think openSuse was my favorite for a while and then switched to OSX86 until I got a laptop at my job (with windows) and I got a tablet so I stopped having a personal computer until about 5 years ago when I got a very cheap laptop that turned to crap when it “upgraded” to Windows 11 and that’s when I discovered linux
My biggest issue with self learning is that I used chmod 777 to try to fix everything since most of the time it “worked”

Technology@lemmy.world•AI Didn't Steal the Mathematician's Work, Sam Altman DidEnglish
47·1 month agoI also read that the AI used about $25 millions worth of tokens, to solve the problem (with a “prize” of $1 mil), not counting a lot of actual mathematicians supervising the works. Can you imagine if that sort of money was available to academics. I know a couple of math post grads and I feel they spend more time trying to secure grants than doing actual work, or at least that’s what they are always talking about

3·1 month agoDTW had some very weird roles at the beginning, I think it’s easier now.
When my father traveled I applied and they told me to come to the “office” at 9am on the day of the flight to verify my docs and pick up the pass, but the flight was at 7am. I called and told them about the flight time and told me they could not issue it a day prior and recommended to change my father’s flight…
You are right, I shouldn’t said the movement, but the may day or may 1st commemorates among other things the general strike that started on May 1st and the Haymarket affair that took place in Chicago
For a movement that started in Chicago, celebrated in the whole world on May 1st except in the US and Canada

Technology@lemmy.world•Sony Implements New Customer Harassment Policy Following Backlash Toward Its Plans to Stop Making Physical Game DiscsEnglish
5·1 month agoI worked at a call center for xbox. Yelling definitely worked because we had a protocol to escalate angry customers to tier 2 and they usually get some freebies like a few months of xbox live, some games or a gift card. There was a thin line between yelling/bring angry and being rude. We had the option to disconnect the call of there were personal insults
The people who cared are also a big proportion of people that actually posted and commented there. I kept lurking for a while and the quality of content and discussion declined very quickly. Now there are a lot of bots fighting with other bots on big /r. The only communities that maybe stayed the same are the ones that were very niche to begin with
