Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What's your self-hosting success of the week?English
2·6 days agoI got a test box set up with nixos and a config that runs all of my services. I wanted to test the declarative rebuild promise of it, so I:
- Filled the services with my some of my backed up data (a copy of the data, not the actual backup)
- Ran it for a few days using some of the services
- Backed up the data of the nixos test server, as well as the nixos config
- Reinstalled nixos on the test box, brought in the config, and rebuilt it.
And it worked!!! All serviced came back with the data, all configuration was correct.
I’m going to keep testing, and depending on how that goes I may switch my prod server and nas to nixos.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Some questions about how to structure my self-hostingEnglish
13·8 days agoI also recommend forgejo over gitea. I’m running forgejo and I love it.
For your reverse proxy, look into pangolin. It combines proxy with wireguard tunneling and auth. So you can set up access controls on a service by service level. It’s great. I use it and love it. No affiliation. Just really happy with how it works.
Why not both? 🤣
Am in US. I will NEVER own a house with an HOA. NEVER

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Using VPS for remote access of my server - some questionsEnglish
4·11 days agoI agree with the other folks recommending Pangolin on a VPS for this. It’s great. It combines a reverse proxy and a wireguard tunnel together for you. You don’t have to open any ports on your home network, and Pangolin allows you to set access levels for each individual service.
So you can have some fully open for those who aren’t going to mess with VPNs and tunneling, and you can put other things behind Pangolin auth to add additional protection.

1·11 days agoAre you able to ssh in with Pangolin? I’m also using Pangolin on a VPS, and though a little while ago (last year somteime?) they demoed a tool for ssh over the pangolin tunnel, I could not get it to work.

Technology@lemmy.world•Thanks a lot, AI: Hard drives are already sold out for the entire year, says Western DigitalEnglish
6·25 days agoNice. I got three 14TBs around the same time for the same reason glad I did.
I scored some new WD 14tb drives for $120 US last October, and I am glad I did! Was a hell of a deal.
Sibling from another mother! Tried it a few times over the years here and there just like you, until going full time.
Also got a full homelab going and have been learning python.
I found the article I read about this, which was published a year ago on OSnews. Here’s the link
I read a deep dive into the macos “certified UNIX” thing and it’s a scam. I dont remember the details but the certification is obtained only through a set of testing exceptions. The macos used by people is not the macos that is Unix certified.
As a former macos user (2013-2024ish), macos has become IMO a very user hostile experience. It’s not quite as bad as windows, but macos is not the “user friendly, it (mostly) just works and gets out of your way” os it used to be.
I’m full time Linux now and when I have to use macos or windows I cannot believe how user hostile they both are.
Linux is far from perfect, but at least I control my system/os.
