  • Depends if you’re hosting something public, or something private.

For public, a webserver is a simple start. Can be anything you want it to be, but as complexity increases, so does the amount of potential attack vectors, so keep that in mind of you’re considering adding things like WordPress and the like.

For private, a NAS and/or a simple game server is a simple and useful start.

As for how, there’s a million ways to do it, and I’m an old stubborn BOFH that still cling to the old ways of doing it (as in, no VMs, no containers), so I’ll defer to others for that.

While purpose built server hardware is always nice since it comes with some useful additions, the truth is that “any” machine will do. Old discarded PC will do just fine.

  • For the longest time, in my online vocabulary, POC meant “piece of crap”. And then a few years back I started seeing posts and articles where this and that person was referred to as a POC, and it took me a while of thinking “that’s a bit harsh, though?”, until I realized that my three decades old IRC lingo had to be updated.

I can live without my original definition, as POS serves the same purpose. Plus, my earlier use had no connection to skin tone, but using it as “Piece of Crap” today gives some racist undertones that I don’t want to be associated with.

  • We do send them both left and right (west and east), as well as north and south. That’s how you get to orbit. Mainly east to take advantage of the earth’s rotation (can’t think of a good reason to send them west, other than suborbital/ballistic flights. Maybe it’s been done for orbital rockets, I never checked). North or south for polar orbits, which is common for monitoring satellites.

Each of those flights start by going up in order to clear the thickest part of the atmosphere. If you watch a rocket launch long enough, you’ll see it slowly start pitching down after a while in order to gradually oriented towards horizontal flight, this is called a gravity turn.

As for down, well… you will not go to space today.
