Solar energy is more efficient in space because there’s no atmosphere and depending on the orbit can be in the sun for much, much longer than on earth over the day. Apparently you can beam the energy down to earth somehow, but you lose something like 50%. So the solution is to put the data center up where you get the power. The downside is that it costs a fuckton to send it up, cooling becomes an issue, temperature gradients become an issue, heat and cold cycles as it goes from sun to the dark side of earth is an issue, and the funnest part is that cosmic rays can fry electronics like GPUs.

politics @lemmy.world•Bidenomics Was More Successful Than People Think | Conventional wisdom holds that Joe Biden’s bet on climate investment was a bust. The data suggest otherwise.
11·6 days agoEnergy use grows. Unless 100% of that new energy is green, then some of it will be from new fossil fuels. Getting literally 100% of new energy from green is a serious task. Which yes we really need to do, but this “gotcha, biden broke production records, gotcha” is just misleading.
*Also, how much of that new production is for export. Again we really need to stop this but this is now along the lines of 100% new global demand would have to be green.
“Fucking hell mate that was bloody exhausting, oh wait.”

News@lemmy.world•Purple Heart vet sues after National Guard troops detained her as she sat quietly in the front yard of her DC home
139·7 days agothe National Guard claims that King was approached by the troops because she was a suspect in an assault of a National Guardsman two days earlier.
King’s attorneys said they believe she was targeted because she has been outspoken against the National Guard’s presence in D.C., including putting signs on her front patio that are critical of their deployment. Two signs read: “Occupation: Troops Out” and “National Guard Stop Being So Embarrassing.”

Work Reform@lemmy.world•Trump’s tariffs resulted in a massive transfer of wealth from working people into the hands of millionaires and billionaire
1·7 days agoIf I go to Walmart and pay by credit card, well in the old days they didn’t track what the individual bought, just the total. And they probably don’t want to admit it if they do. Online like Amazon keeps track.

Work Reform@lemmy.world•Trump’s tariffs resulted in a massive transfer of wealth from working people into the hands of millionaires and billionaire
38·7 days agoCustomers pay the tariffs. And then tax payers (customers) pay for the tariff refunds. Which the corporations pocket because it’s too difficult to return it to the customers.

2·12 days agoYes but when a half black man won the highest office in the entire country their heads exploded. There was a real shift at that point. Fox went off their rocker. I’m telling you, that was a changing point.
