When I work from home, I avoid:

    • Unnecessary small talk when making coffee that turns a 5 minute stop at the pantry into a 15 minute conversation.
    • Getting ambushed at my desk and getting cornered into an impromptu meeting.
    • Spending close to 2 hours (total) driving that I can spend working instead.
    • Being exhausted from having to get up early in the morning.

Literally the only downside is lack of socializing, which depending on the person, isn’t a bad thing. My coworker and I solve that by meeting once every other week at the office for a couple of hours.

The huge irony is I only pretend to work at the office, at home I actually worked and not only didn’t mind it, I enjoyed it.

In office work is 99.999% performative fluff, but that’s exactly what “management” as a department is, so that’s why they think that’s what work is.

I don’t see the office as a place for work anymore. It’s like this place where work-related people come to hang out with me and other random things distract me. It’s like going to an expo where everyone and everything is on display, but apart from the live demonstrations, it’s just for show.

Some managers, I swear going into the office is just for them. They barely get anything done but they get to hang out with their “friends”.

My work from home is great because I can get everything I needed done by like 1:00pm and I’m done. That collective four hours of total shit, socialising, meetings, coffee walks, etc. I get back in my life to do what I want to do with it. I could work more or output as much as everyone in the office today and go play games…

Exactly what I was trying to imply!

Rather, these types goof off at home and in the office except that when it’s in an office it looks like work to their peers.

It’s actually worse in the office. At the office, I have to distract myself from how upset I am being here.

I work, but I end up with a shitload of downtime and feel like I am doing nothing half the time. There are days when I have literally just played games on my phone or laptop all day, at work. (We are all already across the country at different locations, in an office).

I get constant praise from everyone above me. As far as I can tell, I am like their best employee. All I can think is, WTF is everyone else doing at work?

Some people are super fucking dumb and even cause problems.

One trick - managers don’t often want to get actual work either. They’re lazy fucks half the time. When you actually work and raise serious issues to them, you give them work, work where they know they have to do something or it’s bad.

But if you kinda slide by too and quietly handle shit and give them thumbs up every conversation like “all good boss, already took out the garbage too”, they will fucking love you.

It’s really that easy. Don’t give them extra work, which means actually do your job visibly so people see you get something done, but also don’t take it more serious than your boss so they don’t know have to worry about shit they don’t want to worry about.

I have made the mistake many times of trying to tackle big issues when the boss doesn’t want the extra work, and it’s easiest to just lie and say everything is fine, and do what you can to put out fires yourself.

On the software side, I noticed a bunch of alarms going off and broken shit… Then I realized no one was actually looking at this but me. Sometimes my problem is I am the only person who cares about this shit and I have to know to stfu. I literally have an easier time when I care less about broken software, rather than point out how fucked some things are.

lol when I worked in an office I maybe worked 2 hours at most on average. The rest was drinking coffee, listening to music, browsing the internet, watching anime, chatting with coworkers, smoking, going out to lunch and drinking. And really that was only a couple days a week, the rest of the week I had my personal assistant drive me around to do check ups on employees, which was basically me sleeping. I got my work done, but that’s basically how a work day went. And if you question how I got away with all of that, it’s because I was the CEO’s assistant and he knew lol. I actually lived with him when I first moved until a got a place of my own. I will say the copious amount of alcohol consumed at that point in my life was impressive, but hey it helped me get over all the ptsd of working in education.

So I was a government contractor, don’t worry not like the shit you see on TV these days. Things related to states getting funding for natural disasters and so forth. Security. Security with guns lol. Helping people who dd214’d get all their benefits and make sure they didn’t get taken advantage of. Material handling. Event Handling. And a bunch more. And job aside, a support animal for people with ptsd.

The irony is that I was going to enlist in the Air Force, broke my leg and ended up a contractor. I can safely say I’ve been on more bases then most of my friends who’ve been enlisted lol
