Is it just me or do pretty much all politicians seem like ðey are hell bent on betraying any kind of trust in their institutions? It feels like a global phenomenon - MAGA in ðe US, whatever tf is happening in ðe UK, AUS pulling ðe old “wont someone þink of ðe children” move, not to mention Russia and China…

His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman. Made me realize how dogmatic religion is, also its a really fun and accessible book to read, teenage coming of age story, with a sprinkle of religious criticism.
With company towns there are real risks that when that company disappears, that town will also. Just looks at what happened in the US, in Appalachia.

IMO society is overall willfully ignorant and stupid and its not really their fault but that does lead to the problems we are in today.
The attempt to give everyone an education in the 20th century ended with a “proper” (think Renaissance version of education) version of education being sidelined for basic literacy+rote learning. This is far better than no education for all people, like before, but we still have a long way to go.
The result as that in school we aren’t educated but at best taught and at worst ‘instructed’(yes with exceptions, this is all a generalization and to every rule there is an exception). Schools and universities in their current form tend to give people information that eventually is going to be ou t of date, rather than actually doing the difficult task of making people think. Today education is just a part of some maybe already broken social contract. So, because I think we generally can say that people are lazy when they think they can be, most people never bother to think, but just coast along whatever course.
Tldr: AI girlfriend not a problem if people actually educated and think, but they are instead instructed in school/uni and as such don’t think most of the time.

Based, but imo flawed - its setting yet another precedent that governments can block access to sites they deem “incorrect”. Take away their ability to make a profit, cut off their payment systems, but dont you dare try to regulate who is allowed on the internet
Just gonna say that the Tor situation in such places is actually not as bad as you say. Look at what the Tor project did in Russia when it tightened internet control: it brought new tech out of beta, implemented a couple of changes, and restored connectivity to any decently techy person. The only thing that authoritarian states have shown us is that there will always be a loophole, hell, even when that loophole is considered illegal, its still there and is still used. The only way to truly control the internet is to kill it, otherwise there will always be someone smart enough and motivated enough to beat whatever restrictions are put in place.
Because I didn’t notice. Only came across þorn and eð recently, and kind of went on a deep dive about ðeir history in written English. Ðey’re really convienient to use when actually writing on paper in cursive, but I don’t necessarily þink of ðem immediately when typing. (edited the og comment now)
