cygnus@lemmy.cato Technology@lemmy.world•This ‘College Protester’ Isn’t Real. It’s an AI-Powered Undercover Bot for CopsEnglish526·3 days agoPolitical protests are incredibly important to me because they give people a way to express their dissatisfaction and push for change. When I see others out in the streets, organizing and demanding attention to issues that matter, it reminds me of the power we have as individuals to challenge the status quo. Protests help raise awareness about injustices that might otherwise go unnoticed, and they can be a catalyst for real, meaningful change. For me, they represent a critical way to hold governments and institutions accountable and ensure that our voices aren’t drowned out. They remind me that political participation is not just a right, but a responsibility to help shape the society we want to live in.

In Canada we have Charlie Angus who is a legend (his band opened for the Dead Kennedys back in the day) but is sadly retiring.

cygnus@lemmy.cato News@lemmy.world•'This is the crisis moment': Political scientist says Trump crossed a crucial red line1·6 days agoThe American people’s passiveness with regard to “red lines” is about on par with Putin’s overuse of the term. I expect a bit of whining online for 24-48 hours but no meaningful actions.

cygnus@lemmy.cato World News@lemmy.world•South Korea President Yoon declares martial lawEnglish0·5 months agoOf course everyone on the right didn’t like it, because “Fuck Trudeau” is the extent of their political understanding. It was overkill in hindsight, but in the moment, with the capital paralyzed and armed terrorists in Coutts, some benefit of the doubt must be given.
cygnus@lemmy.cato World News@lemmy.world•South Korea President Yoon declares martial lawEnglish0·5 months agoCanada invoked the Emergencies Act in 2022 when the national capital was occupied by a convoy of antivaxers who shut down the city for days. There was some debate as to whether it was necessary and there was an inquiry afterward. The main reason for invoking it was to allow the federal government to use law enforcement since the Ottawa municipal police mostly sat on its hands during the whole debacle.
