unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.deto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are there any lemmy instances that support freedom of speech?141·13 hours agoThere will always be moderation. If you dont ban certain things, people will have to defederate your server or risk being raided by the police. That being said, there are some more lenient servers, but few servers are completely hands off. Your server is not what decides whether your post gets deleted or not however. That is always decided by the mod of the community you post/comment in.
unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.deto Technology@lemmy.world•Advanced OpenAI models hallucinate more than older versions, internal report findsEnglish6·14 hours agoYeah, whenever two models interact or build on top of each other, the result becomes more and more distorted. They have already scraped close to 100% of the crawlable internet, so they dont know what to do now. Seems like they cant optimize much more or are simply too dumb to do it properly.
unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.deto World News@lemmy.world•German teens denied entry to US for traveling ‘under false pretenses’ and ‘intended to work’: Border PatrolEnglish913·14 hours ago“But at the time, we didn’t think it was happening to Germans,” Lepere said. “That was perhaps very naïve. We felt so small and powerless.”
They never think it could happen to them until it does. It already happened to Germans months ago tho and there was lots of press coverage, so this case of “i didnt know” is extra odd. I guess people just dont pay attention to actual relevant news.
If an instance has multiple hundred active users, i doubt its going anywhere anytime soon. You can also just contact the admin of any server and ask how they fund it and what their future plans are. The “first seen” column also quickly gives you an idea of how long standing the server is.
Neither. Never go for an instance thats at the top in terms of user count unless there is a specific reason to do so. This applies to all fediverse or decentralized services.
Go for any of the ones below the red line or sort this table by MAU and find one even further down. Excluding US based servers is also something to think about.
unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.deto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Could I render the computer-generated graphics from Toy Story (1995) in real time using a single modern home computer?212·2 days agoModern GPUs are easily 1000x faster than the ones back then, so 800k hours would be reduced to 800h which is a month worth of time. Thats just raw compute tho, there is lots of optimization work that has happened in the last 30 years, so its probably waaay less than that. I would expect it to be possible in a few days on a single high end GPU depending on how closely you want to replicate the graphics. Some rendering things might be impossible to reproduce in identical manner due to a loss of the exact system and software used back then.

If they defederate you, there is no value in your self hosted instance.
unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.deto Technology@lemmy.world•Angry, disappointed users react to Bluesky's upcoming blue check mark verification systemEnglish4·3 days agoThe biggest thing is that you need to be manually authorized by them for federation. They will only ever federate with servers that arent serious enough competition to lead to democratization of the overall network.

My wife keeps finding these in most of the eggplants she cuts, and is concerned if this is something bad, or just something normal.41·5 days agoIf it “breaks” it might not actually sever the strands of the material, and behave more like wood splitting along its length. Also if it was oxidation then the whole cut surface on the right should be completely black.
unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.deto World News@lemmy.world•German parties’ boycott of far right looks to be over — with AfD on course for key jobsEnglish5·5 days agoI mostly blame this on media manipulation. There is a constant barrage of fearmongering about recession and inflation and immigrants and terrorism even by supposedly left media outlets. Fact is, people arent doing bad in Germany, everything is mostly fine, crime is going down, people arent starving, the green energy sector is growing, the immigration levels are manageable. Its extremely clear that all this propaganda is coming from the AFD/CDU + international influences like Musk and Russia, because it all stopped right after they won the election.
Also people dont seem to understand that big changes take longer than 4 years, so just voting for the good guys for one election period isnt going to do much. The current government at any given time is usually busy dealing with the mess left by the previous government. So to people that dont actively engage with politics, it will look like nothing good came from voting for the good guys and they go back to voting for the old center right parties.

My wife keeps finding these in most of the eggplants she cuts, and is concerned if this is something bad, or just something normal.81·5 days agoThe surface to the right has been cut, but the surface to the front (which has the dots), looks like it has been broken apart from the rest of the plant by force not cut with a knife. So why are these black dots only in that small area and not everywhere on the front facing surface? Something about the area i marked is different from the rest.
I dont wanna bully people for their donations too much, but yes, wikipedia is one of the lowest donation priorities out there.

When its niche knowledge that doesnt get a lot of media attention. So not in this case.
