I noped the fuck out of that course. I’m sure it’s super interesting and rewarding, but I just couldn’t take it mentally at the time.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Setting up WireGuard for my mom remotely so she can access my homelab and tunnel traffic. Looking for tips to make this as seamless as possible!English
7·16 hours agoI’m warming up to the idea of using some sort of RDP software. I saw that Anydesk is proprietary, do you have any experience with Rustdesk? I’ll do some research.
Thank you (and everyone else who has responded)!

5·20 hours agoSorry.
Where are you installing it for her, PC or router?
Her client will be on her laptop.
What OS is she running?
Windows.
What other remote tools do you have available?
More or less none. Any tools I’d need would have to be set up remotely on her device.
Frankly I’d just use Tailscale.
Yeah, I’m starting to lean towards Tailscale or Netbird.
Thanks.

Pretty sure that’s how it is in Sweden too, though I’m not sure if grocery stores have a right to ban you like that. I have a tendency to put stuff in my pocket if I forget to take a basket.

3·8 days agoAh, that’s a shame. Thanks.
That’s really cool!
Syncing is a problem without a seamless solution. The official syncthing app for Android is abandoned and syncthing-fork isn’t trustworthy and feels vibe coded. Nextcloud is way too bloated for simple vault syncing.
I’m personally warming up to the idea of using
pass.
Out of curiosity, what services do you use for sharing?

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Mathieu Comandon Explains His Use of AI in Lutris DevelopmentEnglish
30·13 days agoRegardless of AI, Heroic is a much better alternative unless you need some niche integration that Lutris provides. The Lutris developer is super stubborn about the most strange stuff, like absolutely refusing to upgrade the runtime of the flatpak because of some obscure controller regression. He’d rather see poor performance with super old mesa libraries and poor security for the majority.
But yeah, the heavy AI usage just makes me even more hesitant to use or recommend Lutris.

91·16 days agoA growing minority wants to avoid investing in US big corp, or in anything US related in general given the current political situation.
I’m definitely one of those people but there just aren’t that many alternatives. Like I said, I did consider Fairphone, but there were so many cons to their devices that it’s just not a reasonable choice for me personally. Which is unfortunate.
Thanks.

31·16 days agoI wouldn’t trust any device made by them, regardless of the OS.
What device would you trust?
Edit to say you are basically just rewarding their behaviour.
That’s a good point and it’s one I’ve been considering. I would’ve bought a second-hand phone if it weren’t for the fact that the second-hand market in my country is so bad to the point it’s not even worth considering.

Currently, the Pixel 10 goes for 600€ including taxes, while the Pixel 9a goes for 370€. Both are on sale right now. The iPhone 17 and the Samsung S26 meanwhile both go for 1015€ and 1106€, respectively, just for price comparison. Would you still go with the 9a over the 10 in this case?

I’m just not a fan of mesh VPN solutions that I have no direct control over (i.e. cloud based), and self-hosting them on my own means I have the responsibility of properly securing and hardening the server on which it runs, which I’m not a fan of either haha.
But it might be the best solution, we’ll see. If that’s the case though I’ll probably go for Tailscale despite the fact that I prefer the open source nature of Netbird, and that’s because Tailscale is just more reliable and mature in my experience. It feels like Netbird might be pushing too many new features (like the reverse proxy) before their core features are finished.
