The state of Minnesota and the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul filed a federal lawsuit Monday against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Border Patrol, accusing them of unconstitutional use of federal agents following the fatal shooting of a Minnesota woman by an ICE officer last week.

The suit alleges that federal law enforcement’s actions in the Twin Cities, including crowd control and enforcement tactics in the wake of protests over the killing of Renee Nicole Good, violated residents’ constitutional rights and exceeded federal authority.

Minnesota officials are seeking court limits on how and where federal forces operate in the state as tensions remain high after widespread demonstrations over the incident. The suit comes alongside a request for a temporary restraining order to halt the enforcement action or limit the operation.

Minnesota elected officials gathered to announce news of the lawsuit and its various allegations during a Monday evening press conference.
