Good news: you don’t have to ascribe to an oppressive religious dress code. The people that do want to dress in ways that conform to their religious and cultural beliefs can, and that continues to have fuck-all to do with you.

We should obviously ensure it’s safe for them to leave such a situation and provide education on the resources available to anyone looking to flee a hostile domestic environment.

What about people pushing/forcing their partner into wearing more revealing clothes than they are comfortable in? Or just otherwise controlling it. Sure, abuse like that should be illegal (it often already is, although enforcement is usually terrible) and there needs to be support for people to get out of bad situations. But you’d never see those cases because they’re not visibly other from you in the same way.

That’s not okay, which is why where are not and should not be any laws in our country regarding what to wear, what to read, what you are allowed to do with your body (as long as it doesn’t violate someone else’s or force them into violent, gory, or sexual situations)

You hearing this, Christians? The USA isn’t here for you to make puritanical.

The men forcing women to dress like this aren’t using the law to force them. Laws forbidding dressing like this are, theoretically, to protect them from being forced.

          • The treatment for this is not to outlaw the dress codes, rather to provide services that help people get away from abusive partners.

So the stuff that women have been fighting for since the late 20th century. Also the stuff white Christian nationalists want to eliminate:

I’m in favor of all that, too.

Plus, we all know that, whatever the theory, a lot of people just want to duck with Muslims.

The ones forced into it, I pity. In my area, it’s fairly common to see a women (and girls) out in the park in full religious garb, while their husband is in sweatpants and flip-flops. It definitely makes me angry. I honestly don’t think anyone chooses to dress like this unless they are forced to by a man.

In general I think we need to look to what feminists from similar cultural backgrounds to this say we should do and amplify their voices. I really don’t want to get into a position where many of them see feminism as at odds with their culture, religion, and other beliefs. It’s an ideology that must adapt to a culture in order to serve as a liberatory force within it

I see this sometimes from a distance, even with children. The boys are wild and loose, the girls on a tight leash.

Unfortunately, trying to address that with the sledgehammer of The State is not easy to do safely.

I’m open to the probability that there are such women. But I can’t imagine that they area anything but a sharp minority.
