        Who cares about Epstein?

“My dear Jeffrey, it has been a fortnight since we last met, and the tender touch of your hand upon my face still brings me fond memories…” -trumps letters to Epstein

Sad thing is if he’d just gone away quietly after his first term like all civilized Statesian presidents, we legitimately wouldn’t be talking about his dear friendship with the famous pedo

Fist of all - have you met trump? Nothing about him is civilized, statesman-like or ‘normal’ in any way. He’s a demented rapist. A demented child rapist. The chance that he would ever do anything to benefit anyone but himself is, and has always been, zero.

And people would most definitely still be talking about his dear friendship with the guy who didn’t kill himself.

There is a chance that he raped women on that island too.

He’s raped women whilst not on the island so, you know, there’s a good chance he’d do it on the island as well.

Trump has publicly denied that he was named in the files.

The two were photographed together and Trump commented on their friendship in at least one interview. It’d be beyond belief that his name wouldn’t appear, at least as an associate. Anyone who can’t see that is unable to tell up from down.

Justice Department officials are planning to meet with Maxwell “in the coming days,” Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche announced Tuesday. Later that day, the House Oversight Committee approved a subpoena for Maxwell. Trump said that the subpoena for Maxwell “sounds appropriate” during questions from reporters at the White House.

I’ll bet $1000 right now that she testifies that Trump played no part in any of the illicit activities. Then, for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with her testimony, she’ll have her sentence commuted or pardoned or overturned or whatever. Not immediately. But sometime not too far into the future.

I’m 100% okay with that. This isn’t about political affiliation or cheerleading, it’s about getting predators and pedophiles exposed and (though it’s probably wishful thinking given who the pedophiles are) in jail.

          Exactly.

But that is the republican mindset. “We can’t go after X because that would hurt our team” versus the moral response of “Cool. Round up all the people raping children and chemically, or physically, castrate them”

That’s the theme that MAGA just doesn’t get, and why the “both sides” arguments never hold water. I don’t like anyone in the mega-wealthy class who believes the law is for sale, including the Trump family. MAGA claims to have the same distain for the “elite class”, but always makes a special carve-out just for Trump and his loyalists. I don’t get it.

It kinda mirrors the difference between monotheism and atheism: if you made a list of all the gods both groups don’t believe in, the lists would look awfully similar, differing only by one. But good luck making that argument to a god-fearing Christian.

Political tribalism with a heaping spoonful of introspection avoidance.

It doesn’t matter to them if the other team gets hurt. As far as MAGA is concerned, liberals and progressives (“the Dems”) had it coming and deserve the consequences. But, if their own team gets hurt, that’s simply unacceptable because they are the good guys.

That’s why they’ll look the other way if Republicans, MAGA, QAnons, or Trump supporters are caught out as pedos, extremists, rapists, or criminals. It’s an uncomfortable truth that doesn’t align with their reality. They would have to accept that they’re wrong, so they deflect and distract not to convince others but to convince themselves and protect their egos.

I disagree that that’s what’s going on in their heads. I think it’s more like being Catholic and finding out a priest is touching kids. You are able to convince yourself that that behaviour is the act of an individual, and has nothing to do with your beliefs. This is the power of religion over skepticism: it’s able to convince a bunch of people to put blinders on, and only focus on the common goal. In Set Theory terms, it lets the group focus on the intersection of their beliefs, not the union. All the good parts are where we agree, any bad parts are peripheral and irrelevant.

This is the part that “both sides” do. Like it or not, this is just inherently human behaviour.

If this were 2016 I might agree with you. But the reality we have needed to accept for a while is that most Trumpers are also on hard times. They’re just new to the relegated-class party as the middle class disappears, and they backed the wrong horse to solve the problem. Yeah there is a vocal minority of extremists in their mix too, but the vast majority of Trump supporters are just rural simpletons who saw their manufacturing jobs leave, see their tax dollars disappear, and are too busy working to keep food on the table to have any time to learn about the lies they’ve been fed about socialism and trickle down economics.

They saw a populist dark horse candidate say all the things they were feeling, and voted for him in 2016. And then in 2024 when inflation hit a bunch of millennials and zoomers, they did the exact same thing.

Until a critical mass figures out we’re all complaining about the same root causes, we’re going to keep getting a demagogue elected.

All should be equal under the law. A peasant and a king must follow the same rules, or they simply lose meaning.

I mean the biden administration had those files for all four years and didn’t release them. They would have been the biggest October Surprise ever.

Of course the name of at least one high-ranking centrist democrat is in there.

The files have only been released since the start of 2024, so they were only a year in their possession.

Likely Trump wasn’t just a participant, but a part of the pipeline for new victims.
